Yoga for Varicose Veins
When the veins in the legs , especially those at the back of the legs dilate and get knotted, they are known as varicose veins. Let's not even dwell on the cosmetic aspect of it, because while they can be a sore sight, they are a bigger sore for those who have them. What is worrisome about this condition is the pain that they cause. And even more troubling is the fact that if left unattended, complications can arise.
Varicose veins are caused by improper blood flow from the legs back to the heart, thus causing the blood to flow backwards into the legs which in turn leads to the enlargement of the veins. Due to the engorgement of blood, the walls of the veins become weak and lose their elasticity, thus bulging which leads to them being prominently visible through the sin. It can be worse for those who need to be on their feet for the build up of the blood puts pressure on the veins causing them to throb. Aside from the pain caused during walking and even standing, varicose veins may often be very itchy, which is another problem altogether!
Since the walls of these veins are thin and they protrude through the skin, scratching them may cause severe bleeding. Even bumping them against a hard object may cause them to bleed! This is one of the more common problems of varicose veins and in severe cases, it may lead to a condition known as venous ulcers, most frequently found near the ankles area. Dermatological problems may also arise such as dermatitis (skin darkening) or venous eczema. In very extreme cases, the blood in the veins may coagulate to such a degree that it may cause superficial and even deep vein thrombosis. Cases of pulmonary embolism have also been reported and these last few ailments could, in turn, lead to more serious health issues. Varicose veins seem to afflict women more than men and they often show up during pregnancy. Weight gain dos indeed have a bearing on them, as do hereditary factors. Those who are continuously on the move or in a job that requires them to stand for long hours at a stretch are also prone to suffering from this affliction as well. Since varicose veins are a result of unsatisfactory blood flow movement, the legs need to be elevated often to get the blood flowing. Yoga has many such wonderful asanas which can help stimulate blood flow and thus minimize the effects of varicose veins, even keeping the severe pain and afflictions associated with it away. The yogasanas which involve inverted positions help greatly with the blood flow. The kind of asanas that help to stretch the hamstrings and leg muscles are very useful. Along with that shirhasana (head stand), sarvangasana or the vipareetkarnee is considered to be the most effective yogasana in the treatment of varicose veins as these asanas help to increase the circulation of blood and also reduce the pressure of the blood that has got collected in the veins.
Life with varicose veins can be painful indeed. But it need not be. Take the steps required to keep the pain at bay.
