Tranquebar-Tharangambadi
Tranquebar is now also known by its original Tamil name of Tharangambadi, which translates as "place of the singing waves". Tranquebar is a small seaside town steeped in history and has many beautiful buildings, some of the most important of which have been lovingly restored. The town has to be entered through a gate that stands close to the meandering river estuary. It is most impressive with its arch of carved stonework bearing the date 1792 and huge wooden doors.
The gate brings you onto King's Street which is lined both sides with schools, chruches and monuments that attest to this having been the birthplace of Protestantism in India. Perhaps the most notable of these are Zion Chruch and new Jerusalem Chruch. They were built in the early eighteenth century and although damaged by the tsunami of 2004 have been returned to their former glory.
Behind this is an ancient Hindu beach temple, partly washed away. Obviously there's Fort Dansborg itself, which dominates the charming baechfort. Indidentally, this is open to the public and contains a very interesting museum. Lastly, mention should be made of the many traditional Tamil houses in this part of town, which makes it a heritage hotspot.
The place of the singing waves maybe difficult for experts to say in Tamil, but with or without a camera Tharangambadi is a tranquil delight..... just 160 kms south of Chennai
