1. Wash off at night:

The most important time to wash your face is right before you can go to bed. Dirt, bacteria and makeup left on overnight can irritate skin, clog pores and trigger breakouts. Use a gentle face wash to let anti ageing creams and lotions penetrate deeper for better results. In your 40s oil production dips due to hormonal changes, so cleansing twice daily may dry out your complexion and make wrinkles look more pronounced. To refresh skin in the morning splash with lukewarm water and follow up with the good anti-ageing moisturizer. Especially in the dry winter weather, use face wash once at night.

2. Be Sun Safe:

Wear sunscreen on all exposed parts of the skin – face, neck, hands, arms, legs, feet, décolleté daily, if you want younger-looking skin. Even 10 minutes of daily exposure to UVA “ageing” rays can cause changes that lead to wrinkles and sunspots in as few as 12 weeks. If your moisturizer doesn’t come with a built-in broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, be sure to apply a standalone sun block that offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. The downside of using sunscreen is that you have to re-apply it every 3-4 hours – one way around this is to re-apply it only you’re stepping out, or if you have washed it off.

3. Be Stress Free:

Did you know that emotional upheavals can make your skin look five years older than your actual age? Constant anxiety increases the stress hormone cortical, which causes inflammation that breaks down collagen. It also triggers a chain of reactions – from facial redness to acne flare-ups. To quell inflammation, eat antioxidant rich foods such as berries, oranges and asparagus. When you’re feeling tense, try deep breathing. Think through the reason for your stress, work out clearly what is possible to change, what is not? Work on solutions where possible and take help to come to terms with what is not.

4. Use a Retinoid:

Research shows that these vitamins - A derivates speed up cell turnover and collagen growth to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and fade out brown spots. Prescription – strength retinoid provide the fastest results. To help skin acclimate itself to any redness and peeling, apply a pea-sized drop to your face every third night, building up to night usage. Milder OTC versions are gentler, although they may take up to 3 months to show results. There are many products available in the market that has retinoid derivates in their anti-ageing skin care products.

5. Update Your Routine:

Altering even one thing in your regimen every 6 to 12 months jump-starts some impressive improvements in tone and texture. When you’re constantly applying products your skin slides into maintenance mode after a year. To keep it primed for rejuvenation substitute a cream that contains alpha-hydroxyl acids for your prescription retinoid twice a week to boost the benefits. Bump up your OTC retinoid to a prescribed formula that your dermatologist recommends.

6. Eat Omega 3S:

These “good fats” in foods such as salmon, alsi and almonds boost hydration, which keeps skin supple and firm. The same isn’t true of the saturated fat in dairy products and meats, which increase free-radical damage that makes skin more susceptible to ageing. Limit saturated fat intake to about 2 tablespoons.

7. Exercise Regularly:

Studies find that women who work out regularly have firmer skin. Exercise infuses skin with oxygen and nutrients needed for collagen production. To keep your skin toned, make time for at least three 30-minute heart-pumping workouts per week. Begin with a brisk walk lest you tire yourself out at the first go.
