Your search for tomorrow

Searching for a new job can be a drag unless you look at it as your passport to getting out of a bad situation. It's always easier to get a new job when you already have a job. Prospective employers tend to view more favorably and at least you are financially secure, if not totally content, until the next opportunity arrives. But it's never a good idea to look for a job during work hours.

Your current job rots and you have all the resources you need there to find a job – Internet, computer, printer, fax machine, phone with unlimited long distance. You could spend every second your co-workers' backs are turned applying for new jobs.

The only thing worse than a job that sucks is a job that sucks where everyone knows you are looking for a new job. The more giddy you get with the high-tech machinery at your disposal for applying for new jobs, the more careless you are likely to be and the more likely someone, perhaps some jerky snitch, is going to catch wind of your activities. And then things go from very bad to worse.

When your boss finds your resume left in the fax machine; when someone uses your computer and your internet history accidentally pops up and they see you have spent the past three weeks surfing hot jobs, you can bid any illusion of harmony you had at your job farewell. Job hunt on your own time, using your own resources. It will save both your nerves and your reputation, and it will keep a bad situation from turning virtually torturous.
