This is not to say that you can never have cake or fried chicken again - life would hardly be worth living without certain foods. Eat for health and enjoyment - there's room for those notse great-for-you foods in a generally healthy diet, just in moderation.

Avoid refined foods and sugars

Go for brown rice over white, whole fruits over fruit juice. Steer clear of anything containing corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, concentrated fruit juices, and, if possible, avoid white flour and white sugar.

Drink less cafferine and avoid sodas

Knowing how much sugar is enough to make your teeth fall out.

Eat enough

Don't cut out any food group or starve yourself to lose weight.

Limit your alcohol intake

One or two drinks a day max - with realistic exceptions. Especially avoid "binge drinking" - it's not pledge week anymore.

Steer clear of trans and saturated fats

These hydrogenerated fats found in processed foods essentially have no nutritional value. Trans fats upset your normal bodily functions radically and contribute to all kinds of problems, including obesity and heart conditions. They're found in snack foods and "junk food". Margaine is a favorite example of trans fatty acids. It's found in most prepared cookies, cakes and other colorfully packaged goodies on the grocery shelf. Go for the real butter, just don't eat the whole stick at once.
