Introduction

Yelagiri, which is a four-and-a-half hour drive from Chennai, is a lovely place to unwind and rejuvenate. It is a charming hill station situated approximately 3,400 feet above sea level. A great place for excursions and adventure camps, it is becoming a popular destination for corporate to hold off-site meets and conferences owing to its proximity to two metros, Chennai and Bangalore.

The roads are excellent and driving through the Ghats section will take around 45 minutes. So those of you who have motion sickness need not worry; before you realize it the 14 hairpin bends are over and you are on the hilltop! The drive up the hill is exhilarating to say the least. The scenery around is stunning with breakthrough valleys below you.

Geographically situated in the Javadhu hill ranges in the Eastern Ghats, the calm and silence engulfs you as you approach the place. The Yelagiri hills are a cluster of 14 villages – the main ones being Athanavur and Nilavur.

Its beauty lies in its abundance of flora and fauna and unspoilt villages retaining their rural identify. There are a number of small hotels around Athanavur which provide you with all the comforts that you may need on a holiday.

For nature lovers, this lovely station is paradise. You could go for long walks and come back to the hotel rejuvenated and refreshed.

The famous places are Taj Gardens, Hotel Hills, Hotel Yelagiri, A.M. Resort, Hotel Landmark, and Sterling Resorts. There are a number of smaller hotels and lodges too. Some of these hotels also organize barbecues and campfires on request.

When to Go

Yelagiri experiences moderate weather throughout the year. The season for tourists is all the year round and you can plan your vacation at the hill resort according to your own convenience. The beauty of the hills is twofold because of the cool weather and calm environs. In the winter months, you might need light woolen clothing through the day.

Getting There

Yelagiri is 170 kilometer from Bangalore and 230 kilometer from Chennai; buses play from Tirupattur via Jolarpet to Yelagiri. There is a direct bus from Chennai too, leaving CMBT at 6am.

For those who wish to reach Yelagiri by train, get off at Jolarpet station and take a cab to Yelagiri. The cab journey would take about one hour.

You can enjoy nature at its best there. Not commercialized like other hill stations in the south, Yelagiri is a perfect getaway for those who want to replenish their batteries and beat the Monday blues!
