It improves the cardiovascular functioning because inversions reduce strain on the heart which normally works against gravity.

While in headstand, de-oxygenated blood is able to flow more easily from the extremities to the heart.

This asana even improves concentration and balance because the fresh oxygenated blood flows more freely from the heart to the brain.

The brain receives a greater amount of blood than normal for a fixed period of time. This helps rejuvenate the neurons and guard against atrophy.

People often report a sense of clarity after doing headstand. It helps to stimulate endocrine system as the head stand stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands which are important in regulating cell metabolism. It has a calming effect which helps cultivate emotional stability. It even strengthens the immune system by improving the circulation and drainage of lymphatic fluid. The lymphatic system is composed of one way valves that keep the lymph fluid moving towards the heart. Turning upside down helps to stimulate the entire system and facilitates the movement of lymphatic fluid from the lower extremities. Due to the reverse pose, the effect of gravity on the spine reduces. Strain on the back is thus alleviated and the reverse flow of the blood in the legs aids tissue regeneration. The weight of the abdominal region on the diaphragm encourages deep exhalation so that larger amount of carbon dioxide, toxins and bacteria are removed from the lungs.

Warnings:

It should not be practiced by people with high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic catarrh, kidney problems, impure blood or weak blood eye vessels.
